If you are not afraid of emptiness, the hike from Taft point to Yosemite is absolutely must be done!
1The departure of the hike to Taft point
We went there in May 2014, at the end of a beautiful late afternoon. The departure is from a car park indicated at the edge of the "Glacier point road", about 2km from the summit. Be careful, because the car park is rather small and can be filled up quickly in summer because it also serves as a place for hiking to Sentinel Dome.
From there, a well-marked hiking trail with wooden signs leads downhill from here. Note that the path goes down to the cliffs. It will be necessary to go back up all the way around 60 meters of altitude difference.
The path passes through small glades and large fir forests. The walk is very pleasant. After about 1.5 km, we leave the wooded area. The path disappears and arrives on a flat rocky area. The reward is right in front. At the end of the rock, it's empty!!

2The incredible cliffs of Taft Point
We slowly advance to the edge and there we discover incredible cliffs! They dive 600m down the valley to the bottom of the valley. The view is truly breathtaking, and the sublime setting only makes the site even more beautiful and impressive. The famous El Capitan and the beautiful Yosemite fall waterfall stand out.

To make the most of the sensations, we lie flat on the ground on our stomachs, crawling until our heads fall into the void. Thrills guaranteed!!
Continuing on the left you can reach another platform where metal barriers have been installed which will allow you to approach more serenely. Not far away, large cracks in the soil can be seen. Brrrrrrr, we're thinking it's not all about much!
In search of new sensations, Flo continues to the end of a rocky point on the left. The photo is sensational, but he will admit that he was not very serene ;-)

We'll stay a good time to observe the cliffs on all the seams. For the return trip, we take the same path to return to the car park. Note that, as for Glacier point, the Glacier point road is closed in winter as well as in case of snowfall.
A very pleasant little hike
Impressive cliffs and spectacular views
Large cracks in the ground
We are Sandrine and Flo, French thirty-somethings. In 2019 we quit everything to live our dream, become nomads and travel around the world. We left with our baby, Lena, who was only 5 months old at the time. After a first trip around the Pacific Ocean by plane and a long 3 months stay in Hawaii, we left to discover Iceland for 3 months on board our 4WD pickup truck and truck camper. Then we continued our adventure in North America.
